A thirteen-member board of directors for the ABA, representing diverse industries for Asian Americans, has been unveiled. The Asian Business Association (ABA) announced the group that will steer it in 2021, a time when the world and business community, in general, is facing the challenge of COVID 19. While unveiling the board of directors, the ABA community was categorical that 2020 was a challenging year. They not only faced hard economic times but also more discrimination and higher unemployment compared to other groups. The organization, which draws its representation from diverse industries, is optimistic that the new board of directors will articulate the pertinent issues helping the community to prosper now and in the post-COVID19 periods. The diverse industries that are represented in the organization include accounting, consulting, finance, insurance, manufacturing/wholesale/distribution, retail, mobile health care, television production, digital document management, legal, pharmaceutical technology, real estate investor/trusts, and information technology.

Leading the organization will be co-chairs James Hsieh, President/CEOof Cybertegic, Inc. and Elizabeth Yang, Attorney/Founder of Law & Mediation Offices of Elizabeth Yang. The vice-chair will be Queena Wei, VP of Business Development at Copyfree. The Treasurer will be Ben.

Pascual, Partner at Thong, Yu, Wong & Lee, LLP, while the Secretary will be Angela Chang,Chief Strategy Officer at KCAL Insurance Agency. The other members of the board of directors will include Vanessa Dew, CSO/Co-Founder of Health-Ade Kombucha, Jason S. The new leadership is stepping up to help their minority small business community. While commenting on this event, the new 2021 co-chair Elizabeth Yang remarked how amazing the organization is, drawing its membership from diverse sectors and the resilience they have shown despite the challenging moments they have faced in the year 2020. The incoming co-chair congratulated the previous leadership for the role they played in the organization and their effort in bringing the Asian American business community together to address their common issues. “They have put on numerous events especially during the pandemic, including events on entrepreneurship and how businesses are pivoting. The incoming co-chair James Hsieh, just like his counterpart, noted that 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for many businesses including Asian businesses. “I am honored to be elected as the co-chair of ABA with the amazing Elizabeth Yang for 2021, to further the mission of the Asian Business Association in supporting our Asian business community during this challenging time. We look forward to helping our business community thrive again," said Hsieh, while acknowledging the efforts of their predecessors.

December, 2020 – Physical and verbal abuse, stalking, rape: these are just a few of many reasons why domestic violence is one of the primary causes of homelessness for women and children in the United States. When women want to escape their abusers and leave, a lot of them experience anxiety about how and where to find safe housing and how they can be able to pay for it.

This is why Shante Saulsberry and Sheri Saulsberry are in the beginning stages of creating a center for women. Janice’s Women’s Center will be a full-service women’s shelter with a unique mission of transforming lives. Their focus is to help and house women who are homeless or are in need of safe housing when domestic violence erupts at their home.

“This center is focused on homeless women and women suffering from domestic Violence. We have recognized a strong need for more shelters and professional resources here in Phoenix, AZ,” Shante said.

“We have been working diligently to get “Janice’s Women’s Center” up and running, so we can provide extra beds for women experiencing homelessness or needing a place of safety all while they obtain the skills and resources to take the necessary steps to get back into society,” she added.

The center will be serving women in need and help them in learning new skills necessary to be successful in the future. They will be providing both a 90-day rotational stay in the center’s Transition housing and access to resources in their Day Center. During transition, women will be provided everything they need so they can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Every transitional housing client will be supported with personalized care that individually fits their needs. Counseling will also be available for all women who stay in a transitional home for any period of time. The goal is to lessen the growing number of homeless women in Phoenix. Also, this is their way of helping women of all need transition back into society with a solid foundation for success. Unlike other traditional centers for women, Shante and Sheri Saulsberry exert all efforts necessary to provide clients with the perfect support services to make sure that employment is secured, long term housing is found, and a successful path forward is open.

Miami, 1st of December, 2020. In Florida, presale vouchers for the Florida Bay Forever specialty license plate are now on sale. Three thousand plates must be sold within two years for the plate to be manufactured, and FNPA counts on all Floridians to make it happen.

The proceeds from the Florida Bay Forever specialty tag will support restoration, education, and scientific programs in Everglades National Parks, including water cleanup, removal of derelict vessels, seagrass restoration, and aids to navigation, among others.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected national park attendance. Selling 3,000 Florida Bay Forever specialty tags before the end of next year (2021) would put us in a privileged position to continue helping Everglades National Park as we've been doing since 1951," said Jim Sutton, Executive Director of the FNPA.

Homestead City Councilman Stephen Shelley initiated this project during his time as Chairman of the FNPA, "I am excited that this plate is finally moving forward and that it could potentially provide a significant ongoing revenue stream to improve park operations and visitor amenities," stated Councilman Shelley. "This is not only important to the Park but is also beneficial to the "Gateway" City of Homestead." State Representative Holly Raschine was also instrumental in promoting the request through the Legislature.

(November, 2020. New York City) - There has never been a time like 2020 in modern history. With a global pandemic, the rise of racial equity hitting a fever pitch, and the global warming caused by worldwide environmental issues growing into a pinnacle global event. The ability to lead with diplomacy is more critical than ever before. Though those just graduated from college, how can they step up tangibly without years of experience? The New York Graduate Plan (The Plan) is a perfect opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and relevant diplomacy experience, with courses, hands on experience and an internship to master skills to lead diplomatically.

In 2014, after many years of work, Nonviolence International New York (NVI-NY) and the United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR) started a joint venture and launched The Plan. With restrictions related to the pandemic, The Plan has been converted to an interactive online platform as a world-class program with more content, enhanced accessibility, and more unique opportunities than ever before, including direct integration with UN Systems and conferences.

“NVI-NY programming is unprecedented” 2018 alumni, Michael Gelb, explains; "You'll be working with and watching the biggest fighters for peace and human rights. Learn everything you can from these people, ask questions, talk to delegations when you can, start a project, and go a little outside your comfort zone. Not many people can say they have an internship at an UN-accredited organization."

The three areas of study in The Plan are UN Civil Society Engagement, Practical Peacebuilding, and Nonviolent Methodologies. Active diplomats and expert lecturers focus on peacebuilding, leadership skill sets, and intervention research and development from a Civil Society perspective with Nonviolence International New York. Combined with intensive workshops and research, The Plan provides over 300 hours to build knowledge and diplomatic abilities.

Practical internship experience totaling 80+ hours is realized in the final portion of training through the United Nations' Civil Society coalitions. This online program's beauty is that students won't accrue the expenses associated with moving and living in NYC, but can make connections with UN staff, diplomats from member states embassies, and civil society while participating in a community of like-minded individuals from the comfort of their homes.

Those with years of experience in volatile countries have also gained valuable experience in The Plan, particularly in the internship programs. For example, after six years of experience in Cambodia and the Philippines, Jarrett Davis attended The Plan. Upon completion of his internship, Davis stated, "I think if I had the opportunity earlier in my career to join a program like Nonviolence International's, I would have been put in sort of an express track, to learning some of those perspectives & experiences critical to diplomacy."

With all the difficulties in 2020, NVI-NY pivoted to provide The Plan online. Additionally, several sponsors and donors provided funding for scholarships. Those who apply as one of the first 40 applicants will receive a $10,750 sponsorship. This opportunity makes The Plan very reasonable at the cost of only $4,000.
